About Induja Karthik

Born and raised in Ayyampettai, Thanjavur district, I developed a deep connection to the cultural roots of music from an early age. My academic journey led me to pursue a degree in Computer Science, graduating in 2003 from Trichy, followed by an MBA in 2005 from Madurai, where I expanded my knowledge and skills.

At the age of 21, I embarked on a new chapter in life through marriage, and soon after, became a proud mother of two. It was after the birth of my second child that I decided to chase my childhood dream of learning the Veena—a dream that had always been close to my heart but was put on hold for years. Initially, I started my Veena journey with the simple goal of playing Ilaiyaraaja Sir songs, a long-standing wish.

However, I soon discovered that in Carnatic music, mastering the Varnams is a prerequisite to playing any song. With this in mind, I began my Carnatic journey, and as I progressed, my passion for understanding the intricacies of Carnatic music grew. Over time, I found myself more deeply immersed in the art form, focusing on its core concepts and knowledge.

Today, I continue to explore and share the beauty of Carnatic music through the Veena, balancing this passion with my personal life. It has been a fulfilling journey, and I am grateful for the opportunity to pass on the knowledge I have gained to my students.

The Journey of Living for Music

Music has always been my passion, and the sound of the Veena has held a special place in my heart since childhood. Life, however, took its own course, and my dream of learning the Veena remained unfulfilled for many years.

Everything changed after my marriage when my husband, knowing how much this meant to me, gifted me a beautiful Veena. It was a gesture that reignited my dream, and without hesitation, I embarked on this musical journey, proving that age is never a barrier to pursuing one’s passion.

Under the expert guidance of my guru, Ms. Akshaya Rao ma’am, I delved deeply into the nuances of Carnatic music. Beyond simply learning chapters or compositions, I developed a habit of exploring the purpose and history behind each piece. I sought to understand why a composition was created, the emotions it conveys, and its significance in the industry. If doubts arose, I left no stone unturned, researching extensively from various sources to gain precise knowledge.

This method of learning shaped my teaching approach as well. I believe in not only helping my students master the technical aspects of the Veena but also sharing the core concepts and deeper understanding behind each lesson. My goal is to inspire curiosity and passion in my students, empowering them to appreciate the profound beauty of Carnatic music just as I do.

My journey with the Veena continues as I explore, learn, and teach, cherishing every moment of this incredible musical adventure.

I would also like to mention that I purchased my Veena from Indhuja Ma’am, who sourced it from Thanjavur. FAQ

How many days it will take to learn veena?

Learning the veena, like any musical instrument, depends on several factors including the learner’s prior musical experience, the amount of practice time, and the type of veena (such as the Saraswati veena or the chitra veena). On average:

  • Beginner (basic knowledge of music): It may take 6 months to a year to get comfortable with basic techniques, posture, and a few simple ragas.
  • Intermediate level: Around 2 to 3 years to learn a wider range of ragas, improve finger strength, and develop fluency in playing.
  • Advanced proficiency: 5+ years of consistent practice to reach an advanced level where you can play complex compositions and improvise.

Regular practice (ideally 1-2 hours a day) with guidance from a skilled teacher is essential for faster progress.

Is it possible to learn veena online?

Yes, it is absolutely possible to learn the veena online, especially with the availability of quality resources and dedicated music teachers offering virtual lessons. Here are some factors to consider:

Advantages of Learning Veena Online

  1. Access to Expert Teachers: You can learn from experienced veena players and gurus, regardless of your location.
  2. Flexible Scheduling: Online lessons often allow more flexible timings compared to traditional in-person classes.
  3. Recorded Sessions: Some platforms provide access to recorded classes, allowing you to revisit lessons for better understanding.
  4. Wide Range of Resources: Online tutorials, videos, and practice material complement live lessons.

Requirements for Online Veena Learning

  1. Veena at Home: You must have a veena to practice regularly.
  2. Good Internet Connection: Stable internet is essential for uninterrupted video and audio during lessons.
  3. Dedicated Practice Space: Create a quiet space for learning and practicing the instrument.
Which veena is best for beginners?

Choosing the right Veena is crucial for beginners to develop proper techniques and enjoy their learning journey. Among the various options, the Saraswati Veena, particularly the Ekanta Veena, is highly recommended for its superior tonal quality and cultural significance.

Types of Veenas for Beginners:

1. Saraswati Veena (Ekanta Veena)

Superior Tonal Quality: The Ekanta Veena, crafted entirely from a single piece of wood (typically jackwood), offers unmatched resonance and tonal richness.

Authenticity: It is ideal for beginners who are serious about learning Carnatic music, as it provides the most authentic and immersive experience.

Longevity: Durable and built to last for generations, making it a valuable investment.

Vibrant Resonance: The uniform material ensures natural sound amplification and a warm, deep tonal output.

2. Portable Veena

Lightweight and easier to handle.

Suitable for younger learners or those needing portability.

While convenient, it lacks the rich tonal depth of a traditional Saraswati Veena.

3. Electronic Veena

Convenient for practice at home with built-in amplification.

Great for tuning ease and portability but does not replicate the natural resonance of a traditional Veena.

Recommended Features for a Beginner Veena:

Material: Jackwood is the best choice, especially for Saraswati Veenas.

Construction: Opt for an Ekanta Veena to ensure tonal consistency and depth.

Tuning and Frets: Ensure smooth tuning and properly positioned frets for ease of learning.

Weight and Size: While traditional Veenas are heavier, they are manageable with practice and provide better sound quality.

Final Suggestion for Beginners:

For a beginner, the Saraswati Veena—particularly an Ekanta Veena—is the best choice if they are serious about Carnatic music and long-term learning. It offers authentic sound and builds a strong foundation in technique and appreciation of the instrument’s true potential.

For those prioritizing portability or ease of use, a Radel Digital Veena or a lightweight Portable Veena can be considered, though they may not match the Ekanta Veena’s tonal richness.

How much does veena cost for beginners?

The cost of a Veena for beginners depends on the type, craftsmanship, and whether it is new or second-hand. Here’s a detailed price guide:

1. Saraswati Veena (Traditional Veena):

Basic Models (For Beginners): ₹20,000 to ₹30,000

Includes second-hand Veenas and joint Veenas (made from two or more pieces of wood joined together).

These are affordable options with decent sound quality, suitable for beginners.

Ekanta Veena (Single Wood Veena): ₹40,000 to ₹80,000

Made entirely from a single piece of wood (usually jackwood), ensuring superior tonal quality and resonance.

A great choice for serious learners aiming for long-term use and authentic sound.

2. Portable Veena:

Price Range: ₹18,000 to ₹25,000

Lightweight and compact, making it easier to handle and transport.

While convenient, the tonal quality may not match a traditional Saraswati Veena, but it is ideal for younger learners or frequent travelers.

3. Electronic Veena:

Price Range: ₹30,000 to ₹40,000

Features built-in amplification and tuning, making it convenient for home practice.

Lacks the natural resonance of a traditional Veena but compensates with ease of use and portability.

4. Custom or Handcrafted Veena:

Price Range: ₹50,000 and above

Made by skilled artisans with intricate designs and premium materials.

Suitable for advanced players or those looking for a high-quality instrument.

Additional Options:

Second-Hand Veenas:

Price Range: ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 depending on condition.

These are budget-friendly for beginners. Ensure the instrument is in good condition and has proper tonal quality before purchase.

Veena Case/Box:

Price Range: ₹7,000 to ₹25,000 depending on the material and design:

Thick Cardboard Boxes: Affordable and lightweight, ₹7,000 to ₹12,000.

Fiber Cases: Durable and weather-resistant, ₹15,000 to ₹25,000.

Investing in a high-quality case is essential for protecting your Veena during transport or storage.

Accessories:

Strings and Maintenance Kits: ₹500 to ₹2,000.

Final Recommendation:

If you are embarking on a long journey into Carnatic music and plan to deeply immerse yourself in Veena playing, it is highly recommended to choose an Ekanta Veena (Single Wood Veena) as your first Veena. Over the years, with proper maintenance—regular melam (polishing) and timely string changes—the tonal quality of the Ekanta Veena will improve significantly, making it a worthy investment for serious learners.

For those testing the waters or with budget constraints, a basic Saraswati Veena or a second-hand Veena in the ₹15,000 to ₹30,000 range is also a good starting point.
